ISAC Members and fellow cytometrists,

Welcome to CYTO University, ISAC’s on-line portal for cytometry education. Education has been part of ISAC’s mission since the beginning, and has grown to include scientific tutorials and pre-congress courses at the annual CYTO conference, and very successful workshops and courses in parts of the world where cytometry expertise and infrastructure is developing. While live courses are effective and very useful, student access is limited by geography, time constraints, and finances, leaving much unmet demand. CYTO U aims to address this need by providing peer-reviewed courses, recorded courses and tutorials from CYTO conferences, and a topical webinar series, among other interactive elements.

The heart of CYTO U will be a set of multi-module courses on flow, image cytometry and shared resource laboratory technologies and applications. These courses are designed, written, and reviewed by experts in ISAC and the wider cytometry communities and presented in an on-line format with self evaluations.

CYTO U Course Development Process:

1. The content for each course is carefully written by a selected group of subject-matter experts in their specific cytometry field.

2. The course is then reviewed by at least 2 experts in the field. Each reviewer is given 3 weeks to review the material and make suggestions or comments for improvement of the course.

3. The course authors make the suggested revisions to the course.

4. The course is designed for online learning by a group of volunteers from the E-learning Delivery Task Force.

5. Final approval of the course is decided by the Education Committee and the Editorial Board (Flow, Image, or SRL Content Task Force).

The courses Flow Cytometry Biosafety and Proliferation Monitoring: Basics of the Cell Cycle are available on-line now.

CYTO U features other content, including recorded sessions from the CYTO conference, a regular webinar series, and other features designed to enable cytometrists from around the world to interact with leaders in the field and with each other.

The driving principle for CYTO U is to maximize community access to high quality educational materials, and access to CYTO U will be free for all ISAC members, and at a nominal charge to non-members. Coupled with ISAC’s sliding scale for membership dues, CYTO U is intended to make cytometry education both accessible and affordable. Of course, live lectures and lab courses offered by ISAC and others in the cytometry community will continue to play an important role in cytometry education, one that will be complemented by CYTO U.

We hope you find CYTO U a useful resource. Check back often as new material is added and send us your thoughts on what works and what can be improved at isac@isac-net.org.

Sincerely,

John Nolan, ISAC Past President and Education Committee Co-chair
